A Tight Network of Friends

Tang Hao

“There were two valuable aspects to studying at Group T," recalls Tang Hao, an alumnus from Beijing Jiaotong University.

Friends from the outset
"The first was the friendship among students—always ready to help each other. The Chinese exchange students formed a very special group among which strong ties were established. Already when applying for a visa, groups formed spontaneously to deal with the bureaucratic procedure. Once we had arrived, many students went shopping and prepared meals in groups. Over the weekend, we often held parties."

Teamwork
"During the third year, teamwork became increasingly important. Some marks were given to the team as a whole, not just to individuals. We also organized small study groups to help each other solve problems in the run-up to the exams. In the end, our marks turned out to be better than those of the Belgian students. Assisting one another in such a way not only strengthened the way we worked as a team; it also allowed us to build up close friendships. Later on, we used this tight network when looking for a job. Many of us landed a position after being recommended the company by a friend.”
