A Chinese-Flemish Encounter

Xu Qing-hua

“My friendship with Kris stemmed from a bold move on his part," remembers Xu Qing-hua, a Zheijang Universtiy of Technolgoy alumnus. "It was during a break—I was relaxing a bit on Group T’s remarkable spiral pathway—that he approached me and suddenly asked whether he could join the courses of the group of international students.”

“Why?” I asked suspiciously. “Will Group T approve of that?”

“The school has given me the go-ahead! I can join in if you agree.”

“If we agree? Of course we agree! Welcome!” I still didn’t really understand why he would want to do such a thing. “This means you will have to study in English, though. Won’t this be a lot harder than studying in your mother tongue?” I asked him nicely whether he wasn’t getting himself into trouble.

“No, I don’t think so.” Kris took his time to explain his reasons. “By joining the international group, I will have to listen to teachers, write reports, and sit exams all in English. That will improve my English fast. There are fewer students in the international group than in the Dutch-spoken ones, so I will have more chances to interact with professors in class. Also, I can get to know students from all over the world and come into contact with various cultures. I submitted my application at the beginning of the semester and finally received a positive answer!”
