Solar RC Glider Wins Solar Olympics

Solar Woman

During the Solar Olympics finals (April 25 at Group T), Flemish Minister of Innovation Patricia Ceysens handed out the awards. The Public's Award, a hot air balloon ride, went to the Solar RC Glider, a solar-driven glider built by the RD3-Wing team. A solar-driven hovercraft took home the Innovation Award. Other prizes went to a backpack including a solar cell, a beach lounge chair with solar-driven fans, and a solar-driven hot air balloon.

In 2008, Group T's Solar Team challenged Belgian high schools to participate in the Solar Olympics. The idea of this contest for youngsters was for them to design and build a solar-driven gadget.

30 teams received a solar pannel, a 100 euro budget, and coaching by the Solar Team members. They worked on their gadgets over a period of six months. Their teachers received didactic materials to integrate the notion of 'sustainable energy' in their classes.
