The Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB), a non-profit, scientific research institute, came up with a unique project to have youngsters experiment with science: Scientists@work brings junior high school kids, accompanied by a teacher, to the engineering labs at Group T.
Gen technology
This year, students from junior highs in the Brussels region worked on the theme 'A new gene in my sandwiches?'. Using high-tech tools, they researched whether new genetic materials had been added to yeast cells. At the same time, they learned about a number of new applications in gen technology; for example how genetically modified yeast cells can be used to produce medication.
Popularizing science
Over the past years, Group T has engaged in a number of similar projects as part of the university college's service towards the community and with the aim of popularizing science.
