European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

The system

The European Commission's European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements, and transferring them from one institution to another. The system makes it easier to recognize your the learning achievements through the use of commonly understood measurements—credits and grades. It also provides a means to interpret national systems of higher education.

The credits

ECTS credits are a value allocated to course units to describe the student workload required to complete them. They reflect the quantity of work each course requires in relation to the total quantity of work required to complete a full year of academic study: 60 credits represent one year of study; 30 credits are normally given for six months/one semester.
