Target group and requirements
The French course is open to everyone who has reached the age of 16. For level 6, you have to sit a level test.
Course contents
The course is organized thematically and takes into account the Department of Education’s directives. Language is approached from a communicative perspective, with an emphasis on oral communication. Some grammar is introduced as a means to communicate more efficiently.
Students who are interested can attend a few French plays. These performances will be prepared in class.
Topics covered include:
- Appointments and arrangements:
- La côte a-t-elle encore la cote?: remembering vacations/vacation formulas
- Consumption: in vino veritas: viniculture in France; Avec ou sans viande? pros and cons of a vegetarian diet ; describing, reading, and judging recipes; preparing and serving typical dishes
- Public and private transportation: transports en commun; voyager gratis; cost of public transportation
- Information services: various exercises for telephoning; la crise des médias et du journalisme; reading newspaper articles; listening to radio and television reports
- Health care: traitements antivieillissement: mythe ou réalité?; cosmetic medicine; teading an excerpt from the play Knock, ou Le triomphe de la médecine by Jules ROMAINS
- Utilities: rendez-nous la nuit: public lighting; remedies for noise pollution; robotics
Other topics can be brought up depending on the subject matter and the needs and interests of the students.
Work formats
The audiovisual material used acts as a springboard for a variety of language activities. As a student, you will assimilate the language information provided through using them in communicative situations. In addition, you will also learn various acts of speech. The four skills are covered: listening, reading, speaking and writing. You will have ample opportunity to be active and creative. At the end of each activity the teacher will give you feedback.

Themes as presented in the directives are supplemented with authentic audiovisual material. The course material will be distributed during class.
