Target group and requirements
The Thai level 2 course is open to everyone who has reached the age of 16. For level 2, you have to sit a level test. The level test allows us to decide which entry level suits you best. It consists of a written and an oral part. The level tests for Thai will be organized in September, by appointment. You will receive more information when pre-registering.

Course contents
This course is intended for students who have followed level 1 or have some relevant prior knowledge. The teacher begins with a review of the basic principles of the Thai language and continues teaching the tones and phonetic writing. This is complemented with introductions to the culture and customs of the country. Daily conversations are in this way generated allowing you to communicate in Thai. The focus of this course is on conversation and writing. You learn more about Thai writing and how to read it.

The topics covered include:

  • Introduction: time, weather, asking directions, using public and private transportation, looking for suitable accommodation, naming body parts and visiting the doctor, family and free time, holding an everyday conversation.
  • Family and culture: members of the family, role patterns, education.
  • Socio-cultural aspects: cultural differences between East and West.
  • Economy: negotiating prices, monetary units, counting and bargaining, paying.
  • Writing: introduction to Thai writing continues.
  • Dealing with practical situations: going to restaurants, asking directions, asking for information, making appointments, visiting a temple, etc.
Working formats
Groups are made up of about 15 students. You learn as a whole class and in small groups. Role-plays allow you to practice your knowledge in concrete situations. To get the most out of this course, you are expected to spend 2-4 hours per week for study and preparation outside the 4 hours of class time.
Course materials 
The teacher uses a text compiled by herself based on material from Thammasat University (Official Central Thai), guidelines from the Thai Ministry of Education and the Thai Teachers’ Training of the Thai Embassy in Brussel.
